4 Month Baby Health Check

4 Month Baby Health Check

At four months, babies are becoming more alert, interactive, and full of new skills. Smiles are widening, heads are lifting, and some babies are starting to show early signs of rolling. It’s an exciting stage for parents—and also a key time to check on your baby’s health and development.

At Walker Street Doctors, this is a doctor-led consultation, with our nursing department providing support throughout. Most of our doctors are mothers themselves, so we understand what this stage feels like and the questions that come with it.

What Happens at the 4-Month Check?

This consultation reviews your baby’s growth, development, and overall wellbeing. We look at:

  • Growth and head circumference plotted in the Blue Book
  • Developmental milestones (movement, vision, social and communication skills)
  • Feeding, sleep, and settling
  • Early preparation for introduction of solids in the coming weeks

This is a great time to start discussing solids—what to look for, how to introduce them, and why variety is important. We follow ASCIA and NHMRC guidelines, which recommend starting solids between four and six months (but not before four months), when your baby shows signs of readiness such as good head control and interest in food. Introducing a wide variety of foods early (including allergenic foods like peanut, egg, and dairy) can actually help reduce the risk of food allergies.

Vaccinations at 4 Months

At this visit, your baby will receive their second round of immunisations, continuing protection against serious childhood illnesses. These include vaccines for:

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough (Pertussis), Polio, Hepatitis B, and Hib
  • Pneumococcal disease
  • Rotavirus (liquid vaccine administered orally)

Our nurses assist with preparation and administration, and we encourage feeding or cuddling straight afterwards to help your baby settle quickly.

Why This Appointment Matters

The 4-month check is about more than vaccines. It’s about making sure your baby is growing confidently, supporting you as a parent, and preparing you for the next stage: solids, mobility, and increasing independence.

✨ At Walker Street Doctors, we’re here to guide families through each stage of early childhood—with excellence, efficiency, joy, compassion, and collaboration.
