By six months, your baby is smiling, rolling, and becoming increasingly social. It’s an exciting stage where little personalities are emerging and parents have started to introduce solids alongside breast or bottle feeds. The 6-month consultation is a key milestone to make sure your baby is healthy, developing well, and protected from serious illnesses.
At Walker Street Doctors, this is a doctor-led consultation, with the support of our nursing team. Many of our doctors are mothers themselves, so we know the questions and concerns that come with this stage.
What Happens at the 6-Month Check?
This appointment is a chance to review:
- Growth, feeding, and introduction of solids (with guidance from the latest ASCIA allergy prevention recommendations)
- Developmental milestones, such as rolling, reaching, babbling, and early sitting
- Sleep, behaviour, and family wellbeing
- Any questions or concerns you’ve noted in your baby’s Blue Book
We’ll also discuss safe and timely introduction of allergenic foods like peanut and egg, which should be included by 12 months in an age-appropriate form to help reduce the risk of food allergy.
Vaccinations at 6 Months
The 6-month schedule includes:
- Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough (Pertussis), Polio, Hepatitis B, and Hib (as a combination vaccine)
This is the only vaccine routinely scheduled at 6 months, which makes it the ideal time to consider adding Bexsero® (Meningococcal B) protection. At Walker Street Doctors, we keep Bexsero in stock in our vaccine fridge, making it easy to add at the same visit.
Because Bexsero is known to cause fever in infants, this is the one occasion where we recommend giving paracetamol (Panadol) beforehand. Our doctors and nurses will guide you on dosing and monitoring.
