Travel Advice: Spain

The dream trip

From tapas in Barcelona to flamenco in Seville and siestas in sun-washed villages, Spain invites slow afternoons, vibrant culture and Mediterranean adventure. Whether you’re strolling the Alhambra, hiking the Camino de Santiago or hopping between islands, good preparation keeps your trip carefree and your health intact.

The problem

Spain’s warmth and lifestyle can lull even experienced travellers into a false sense of security. While Europe feels “safe,” risks still exist from foodborne illness in summer heat to altitude shifts in the Pyrenees, mosquito-borne infections around the Mediterranean coast, and lapses in travel insurance that leave you unprotected in a private hospital.

Why preparation matters

Even within Europe, travellers frequently underestimate:

  • Gastrointestinal infections — often from under-refrigerated seafood or picnic food on warm days.
  • Mosquito-borne illness — sporadic cases of dengue and West Nile virus occur in southern Spain.
  • Tick-borne disease — rural hikes, particularly in the north, can carry Lyme disease risk.
  • Sun exposure & dehydration — heatwaves are common; sunscreen and electrolyte hydration are essential.
  • Medication continuity — some prescription medications are unavailable or sold under different names in Spain.
  • Travel insurance — EU medical systems do not automatically cover Australian travellers.

How Walker Street Doctors can help

A tailored pre-travel consultation with our team ensures you’re covered from departure to return:

  • Destination-specific vaccination review – Hepatitis A and B, typhoid and influenza are often recommended
  • Traveller’s diarrhoea pack – antibiotics and hydration support in case of infection
  • Heat and sun safety strategies – personalised plans for hydration, SPF, and medication storage.
  • Medication & documentation – travel letters for controlled or refrigerated medicines.
  • Comprehensive travel kit – Walker Street Doctors first-aid kits designed for both urban and rural Europe.

Our travel medicine expert, Dr Georgina East, brings her extensive expedition and emergency experience to every consultation ensuring your preparation is as seamless as your itinerary.

When to book

Book your travel health appointment at least four weeks before departure.
This allows time for vaccine schedules, prescription planning and a contingency for any itinerary changes.
