ADHD Care is Changing in NSW

ADHD Care is Changing in NSW

Accessing a diagnosis or treatment plan for ADHD in NSW has traditionally involved long waitlists, high out-of-pocket costs, and a heavy reliance on specialists. But that’s about to change.

New state reforms will allow some General Practitioners (GPs) to diagnose and prescribe medication for ADHD—starting with children and adolescents, and eventually extending to adults. This staged approach is designed to increase access, reduce delays, and lower the financial burden for families seeking support.

At Walker Street Doctors, we welcome this change and we’re committed to staying up to date with the latest guidelines so we can continue to provide the best care possible.

What’s Changing?

Here’s what you need to know:

 1. GPs Will Be Able to Diagnose and Prescribe ADHD Medication

For the first time in NSW, selected GPs who undertake specialised ADHD training will be able to formally diagnose ADHD and initiate medication, beginning with children and teens. Over time, this will expand to include adults.

This doesn’t mean GPs will be working in isolation, complex cases will still involve collaboration with paediatricians and psychiatrists.

 2. All GPs Can Continue Prescribing for Stable Patients

Under the reforms, any GP will be able to provide ongoing prescriptions for patients who are already on stable ADHD medication. This means less back-and-forth with specialists for routine follow-up and prescription renewals.

 3. Children and Teens Are the Initial Priority

Why start with kids? Because delays in diagnosis and treatment can have a major impact on learning, development, behaviour, and family wellbeing. By giving GPs a greater role, the reforms aim to minimise the disruption caused by long specialist waitlists.

 4. Lower Costs, Less Waiting

Families have long struggled with the financial and emotional cost of ADHD care. This reform is designed to reduce out-of-pocket costs, make care more local and accessible, and free up specialists to focus on the most complex cases.

 5. It's a National Conversation

NSW joins other states like Queensland and Western Australia in recognising the vital role GPs can play in managing ADHD. The long-term vision is for greater national consistency in how ADHD is diagnosed and managed across Australia.

What Does This Mean for You?

  • If your child is already on stable ADHD medication, your GP will soon be able to manage their scripts. No more waiting for specialist appointments for routine renewals.
  • If you’re seeking a new diagnosis, especially for a child or teenager, your GP may soon be able to help directly, once specific training is complete.
  • If your situation is complex, your GP will continue to work closely with paediatricians, psychiatrists, and psychologists to make sure you receive the care you need.

Why This Matters

Timely diagnosis and treatment can make a world of difference. It can improve concentration, emotional regulation, relationships, academic performance, and overall wellbeing.

Giving GPs a greater role in ADHD care can lead to:

  • Faster access to assessment and treatment
  • Less pressure on overwhelmed specialist services
  • More continuity of care with your trusted family doctor
  • Better outcomes for children, adolescents, and adults alike

Of course, there are important safeguards in place to prevent overdiagnosis. GPs involved in diagnosing and prescribing will complete targeted training and work within clearly defined frameworks—with support and guidance from ADHD specialists.
