At 18 months, toddlers are on the move, exploring, climbing, and testing out new words every day. This stage is a time of huge growth and change, which is why the 18-month check-up is such an important milestone.
At Walker Street Doctors, this is a doctor-led consultation, with our nursing department assisting throughout. Many of our doctors are mothers themselves, so we know what a big moment this feels like for families.
What Happens at the 18-Month Check?
This is a chance to look closely at your child’s overall health, development, and behaviour. At this age, we pay particular attention to verbal development—checking how your child is using and understanding words, and supporting you if there are any concerns.
We’ll also review:
- Growth and nutrition
- Gross and fine motor skills (walking, climbing, drawing, self-feeding)
- Social interaction and play
- Sleep, eating, and behaviour patterns
- Any questions or worries you’ve noted down (we recommend bringing your Blue Book and a list)
Our team uses the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) as a guide to support conversations about milestones and to celebrate your child’s progress.
Vaccinations at 18 Months
This appointment also includes a key set of immunisations. For the first time, vaccines are given in the deltoid (upper arm) rather than the thigh, which can feel like a big step for parents. At this visit your child will receive:
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) and Chickenpox (Varicella) combined vaccine
- Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) booster
- Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Whooping Cough (Pertussis) booster
Our nurses are skilled in making the process as calm and gentle as possible. A cuddle straight afterwards helps settle toddlers quickly.
Why This Appointment Matters
The 18-month check is not just about vaccines. It’s about ensuring your child is developing confidently, supporting parents with practical advice, and catching any concerns early so that help is available when needed.
✨ At Walker Street Doctors, we’re here to guide families through every stage of childhood—with excellence, efficiency, joy, compassion, and collaboration.
