Your Baby’s 6-Week Check: A Calm Start to Their Health Journey
The first six weeks with a new baby can feel beautiful, exhausting and full of questions.
Your baby’s 6-week check is a chance to pause, check that your baby is growing and developing well, and make sure you feel supported too.
At Walker Street Doctors, this is a longer, doctor-led appointment supported by our experienced nursing team. Many of our GPs are mothers themselves, so we understand the mix of joy, worry, sleep deprivation and “is this normal?” moments that come with early parenthood.
What happens at the 6-week check?
Your GP will gently check your baby’s growth, feeding, sleep, development and overall wellbeing.
This includes:
- checking weight, growth and feeding
- examining heart, hips, eyes and reflexes
- discussing sleep, settling and routines
- answering the questions you have been saving up
- checking in on your physical and emotional wellbeing
Because caring for you is part of caring for your baby.
Your baby’s first immunisations
This visit is also when your baby can begin their routine immunisations. The National Immunisation Program lists the 2-month vaccines as able to be given from 6 weeks of age. These include protection against illnesses such as whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, polio, Hib, rotavirus and pneumococcal disease.
Our nurses help make the process as calm and smooth as possible. Feeding, cuddling and comfort straight after vaccination can help settle your baby.
Why this appointment matters
The 6-week check is about much more than needles.
It’s a chance to make sure your baby is off to a healthy start, ask the questions that have been sitting in your mind, and feel reassured that you are not doing this alone.
